CARTHAGE

Carthage is located north of Indian Point and west of Springfield. This quaint town is the home of artist Sam Butcher, creator of the Precious Moments figurines and collectibles. Carthage is also know for its Victorian homes, civil war battle site and museum, historical attractions, shops and restaurants.

Precious Moments Chapel Created by artist Samuel J. Butcher, the Precious Moments Chapel is a peaceful place of beauty and inspiration. The chapel features more than 50 spectacular murals and 24 stained glass windows. You’ll also enjoy the Gallery Museum, Samuel J. Butcher Home Tour, Tiffany’s and Royal Delights restaurants and the gift shops featuring exclusive Precious Moments figurines.

Battle of Carthage State Historic Site and Civil War Museum The Battle of Carthage, on July 5, 1861, was the first major land battle of the Civil War after the United States Congress declared war against the South. Events of this battle are highlighted in a kiosk of text and graphic illustration at the park located on the site. The Civil War Museum displays authentic artifacts, an elaborate mural painted by local artist Andy Thomas and a diorama depicting the progress of the battle.

Red Oak II is a restored 1930’s rural American village developed by internationally known agricultural artist Lowell Davis, creator of "Little Critter" collectible miniatures. The village’s blacksmith shop, old Phillips 66 station, one-room schoolhouse, country church, Belle Starr home/museum and general store bring back the nostalgia of those simpler times.
